SUMMARY:A Conversation with Dr. Nachito Herrera and Dr. Ramón Pastrano about Inclusion\, Belonging and Cultural Competence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Dr. Nachito Herrera and Dr. Ramón Pastrano about Inclusion\, Belonging and Cultural Competence. \nDeveloping cultural competence often begins with each individual’s increased awareness of one’s own culture and the effect one’s worldview has on understanding other cultures and dimensions of diversity. Cultural competence is important for our world. We can all continue to grow our abilities by reflecting others’ stories. \nNachito is a world-renowned pianist from Cuba. Ramón is a leading cultural competence expert and trainer from the Dominican Republic. Both currently reside in the Twin Cities. They will share insights and stories of their lives\, and how their worldview shifted along their journeys. \n“Cultural Competence is the ability to understand\, communicate with\, and effectively interact with people across all dimensions of cultures and diversity. Cultural competence encompasses being aware of one’s own world view (biases\, mental models\, etc.)\, developing positive attitudes towards cultural differences\, and gaining knowledge of different cultural practices and world views. Cultural competence is having the wisdom\, humility\, courage and the ability to bridge\, adapt and cognitively shift” – Dr. Ramón Pastrano \nSponsored by ImpactLives\, Inc.\nSupported by the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra \nBe sure to also join the WSO to hear Nachito in concert on October 3 at Wayzata Central Middle School and October 10 at Orchestra Hall! \nFree. No ticket required. Out of an abundance of caution for all of our guests\, masks are required to be worn by all attendees. \n \n  \nABOUT THE PANELISTS AND MODERATOR \nNachito has the amazing ability to inhabit two very different musical worlds – classical and Latin jazz. He is the perfect example of how an enlightened artist can transcend various genres creating something that floats above it all. He is an immigrant who is not just breaking down barriers; he is showing that diversity is an essential part of moving humanity forward. \nRamón is an architect of system change and human transformation. He founded ImpactLives in 2007 as a laboratory for social responsibility and innovation. Through awareness-based leadership and critical thinking\, Ramón’s model is designed to assist individuals and organizations in developing new frameworks from where to solve the world’s most challenging problems. \nJonathan specializes in training and facilitation for business and educational purposes. Cultural competence\, conflict resolution and nonprofit leadership are his three main interests. A Fulbright Scholar in 2015-16\, Jonathan has experience working in South Africa\, South Korea and Guatemala\, and is currently a faculty member at the University of Minnesota.
